WASHINGTON — Three thousand poets have arrived in Washington, and most of them are winners. World of Poetry, a for-profit California organization, is holding its fifth annual convention this weekend, its first in Washington. Bob Hope will perform, there will be a "Balloonathon," and literally thousands of awards will be presented.
But then, in the World of Poetry, it's hard not to be a winner. It's just that some of the versifiers don't know it, especially because their award letters call the honor the equivalent of an Oscar.
Mary Zangare, for instance, who is arriving from Las Vegas to collect her Golden Poet Award, said she thought she was one of only a dozen winners.
Actually, two-thirds of the poets in attendance at the Washington Hilton will collect Golden Poet awards. And those 2,000 are just the ones who are paying the $495 registration fee, plus air fare and hotel bill.

Former U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins and longtime poet Samuel Menashe are winners of the first Pegasus Awards, prizes worth a combined $75,000 and made possible by a philanthropist's $100-million grant to Poetry magazine.
Collins, who served as the U.S. poet laureate from 2001 to 2003, received $25,000 for the Mark Twain Poetry Award, given for the "contribution of humor" to American verse.
Among the country's most popular poets, Collins has published eight collections, including "Nine Horses" and "Sailing Alone Around the Room."
Menashe, whose works have inspired critical acclaim but have limited sales, won the Neglected Masters award, designed to raise awareness of the work of "an under-recognized, significant American Poet." The award includes a $50,000 prize and publication of the winner's selected poems by the Library of America.
Menashe's many books include "The Niche Narrows" and "The Many Named Beloved."
The awards were announced in Chicago this week by the Poetry Foundation, a nonprofit organization formed by Poetry magazine to manage the $100- million gift bequeathed in 2001 by philanthropist Ruth E. Lilly, the drug company heiress.

Hot Topic : "The commercial market for poetry is about the size of a thimble"

This may be a reason Authors Books - Not Poem Books make it on the front page of Time Magazine and others so called "Best Seller Lists" - Think about that...

These Publishers are charging tons of money from their Author to place a book for them on That Best Seller List.  Poetry Book Authors will not pay as much as $90,000 to be on that list - I don't blame them; I wouldn't - Well now - How about TV & Radio?

Then together Poets let's do something about all this; How? First when I write a song; and it is heard on a Radio Station and like other new song writers have, and been able to achieve with a Pitch to there Local Radio Network - Then this can be done, because that song is a Poem - That said: Newspaper; Would be a great place to Pitch a Poem to the Editor -  Though this is not a new concept - Heck; I remember when a house wife wanted to clip a Great Poem from a column and send it to their Family & friends. Where did that custom disappear to? What a loss - We need to send our poems to Editors. Ok! we are not on a best seller list; Though we are becoming recognized by our local community, for our Poetry Craft -  Local Radio, they are also providing; Author recognition!

Let's face it - This is what; Only a Poem Book - Wrong; This is joy - pleasure a health benefit and a darn good one!  Well why are millions of Poets crowed into the size of a thimble.

Let's break that mold and push for more Publishing Opportunity as one united force; Moving our Great Ol'e Industry forward.           When I started in publishing I soon became ill yes ill from all that crap I did see going on at that big New York City Publishing Company - Making Thousands - from Author's hard work - Imagine this; Here is that Author and after spending all the hours into a Book - a - Novel etc. sending it into this Big Publishing Company - Only to have that Manuscript set under a pile of others and never to be looked at! Why because the Agent was making deals with other Agents for Books that will sell - Example: You have a book with a Publisher and it sells; now you have a "Fanbase" A readership of sorts and that readership will purchase more books from, the same Author - The Publisher is now willing to pay a retainer on the "New Book" not written yet - Pile that up with loads of writers where a guaranteed sales estimate can be realized - Where will your Book, wait - Not a Book yet be on the Publishers List - Right under a pile of other would be Books - Now lets say you have Funds - Well that may move your Manuscript - Should they find it at all and on to the Agent Desk Pile for "Review" You know where this is going - Though I did say Big - Big Publisher and this would never happen to a small Vanity Press - or would it, uh - The point is "Best Sellers" are created - That is right - Created by Marketing and Advertising; Another words someone has to spend a lot of money! You see and this is some of what is going on there.

I won't go on about money - You will see those costs for yourself when you want a "Review" of your hard work someday - Though I do want to point out that you could get in a "Bundle Deal" with your money and that will get you into Book Stores.

Well the question is write a Great Novel and go no place or write a Poem Book that will at least go someplace and when you are done - do another one - on & on.

James Laughlin Award

If you’re already a published poet, this is the award for you; it’s given for a second book of poetry due to come out in the forthcoming year. The winner receives $5,000 and an all-expenses-paid week-long residency. In addition, copies of her book are distributed to the 1,000 members of the Academy of American Poets.

Deadline: Annual submission window is January 1 through May 15.

African Poetry Book Fund Prizes

The APBF awards three prizes annually for African Poetry. The Glenna Luschei Prize for Afican Poetry gives $5,000 for a book of original African poetry published in the prior year.

The Sillerman First Book Prize for African Poets gives $1,000 and a publication contract for an unpublished book-length collection of poetry by an African author.

The Brunel University African Poetry Prize is a new prize that grants £3,000 to a poet who was born in Africa, is a national of an African country or has African parents, who has not yet had a full-length book of poetry published. (U.S. citizens qualify.) To submit, you’ll need 10 poems.

Tufts Poetry Awards

Claremont Graduate University presents two awards each year to poets they deem to be “outstanding.” The Kate Tufts Poetry Award grants $10,000 for a published first book of poetry that shows promise.

The Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award grants a mammoth $100,000 for a published book of poetry by an established or mid-career poet.

Deadline: Books published between September 1 and June 30 of each year are eligible for the following year’s prize. The deadline for 2016 awards has not yet been announced.

Binghamton University Book Awards

Sponsored by the Binghamton Center for Writers — State University of New York, this competition offers a $1,000 prize for work published in the previous year in two separate categories. The John Gardner Fiction Book Award goes to the best novel or collection of fiction, while the Milt Kessler Poetry Book award goes to the best book of poems.

What has Trump done??

Last night a friend claimed that Donald Trump wouldn’t make a good president; he is brash, he is racist, he is a loudmouth; you know the normal things people learn to recite after being programmed by television news.

The one I loved was that, “Trump is arrogant.”
My friend questioned if one man could make “that much difference in the world today.” To my friend's credit, she was respectful enough to let me respond when she asked, “Really, what has Trump done?”

I said, “In June of last year, Trump entered the race for president. In just a little over a year, Trump has single handedly defeated the Republican party.

He did so thoroughly. In fact, he did so in such a resounding way that the Republican Party now suffers from an identity crisis. He literally dismantled the party. Trump even dismantled and dismissed the brand and value of the Bush family.

Trump has Obama petrified that Trump will dismiss programs that weren’t properly installed using proper law.

Trump has single handedly debunked and disemboweled any value of news media as we knew it—news now suffering from an all-time level of distrust and disrespect.

Trump has leaders from all over the world talking about him, whether good or bad. Trust me, powerful men who have been president before weren’t liked by the global community. I doubt Mikhail Gorbachev liked Reagan when Reagan said, "Tear down that wall."

Trump has expressly disclosed the fraud perpetrated on the American public by Hillary Clinton. He has, quite literally, brought Hillary to her knees—if you believe that nervous tension and disorders offer physical side effects and damage.

Trump has unified the silent majority in a way that should be patently frightening to “liberals.” As the press accuses Trump of being a house of cards, Trump has proven the press is the real house of cards. He has whipped up the entire establishment into pure panic. Trump has exposed them for who they are and worse, what they are. George Clooney was right when he said Trump draws live news coverage of his podium that he’s not yet approached. Thanks, George, you were perfectly correct.

What we see as headline news today are actually the last bubbles from the ship that is now sunk—meaning the standard news media, as a propaganda machine, has been exposed. They have no more value.

Answer: Publishing Companies have been known to scam Author's ( Not All ) and Marketing was totally devoid of Technology we use today for our Poets; Isn't it time we as Poets demand proper Marketing Services and deplore such past handling of our funds to promote our Great Poetry? Ask your Publisher how much money they intend too, also spend on your Marketing/Promotions for your book and suggest our services.
